Warrnambool is located about 260 kilometres south west from Melbourne on what is known as the shipwreck coast. It also lies at the western end of the majestic Great Ocean Road the travels the coast from Geelong through the scenic coastal regions around Anglesea, Lorne and Apollo Bay. Warrnambool has an historic legacy that is woven around its maritime past. The Flagstaff Hill Maritime museum is a testament to this historic past and displays include a recreation of the port complete with ships, a lighthouse and the original historical buildings. With the current recovery in the numbers of all species of whales well under way, the Southern Right Whale is now returning in ever increasing numbers to the waters around Warrnambool. These whales seek areas very close to the coast to give birth and suckle their calves and Warrnambool is now one of those places where whale sightings are very common between the months of May and October. The Logans Beach area is one of the most popular for whale watching. The Southern Right Whale is the third largest of all the whale species after the Blue Whale and the Fin Whale. Anecdotal sightings of Blue Whales, which are still quite rare, have also been made in the area.
The city has a magnificent ocean frontage to Lady Bay and there are several very popular surfing beaches in the region. A man made seawall stretching from the point proves a protected swimming and boating area. Port Fairy lies at the western end of Lady Bay and it provides excellent harbour facilities for fishing boats and recreational water sports. Warrnambool is a wonderful holiday destination with lots of excellent resort and hotel style accommodation and plenty of tourist infrastructure. Restaurants and cafes abound as do attractions like museums and galleries. The local hinterland is full of unique places to visit. The great ocean Road is only a stones throw away and places like the Tower Hill State game reserve, Port Fairey, the Merri and Hopkins Rivers provide great destinations for an interesting day out.
Warrnambool is linked to Melbourne by daily rail and coach services so it is really easy to get to. It is also an extremely popular destination for fishermen and local charters operate regular trips. Other places that you can visit from Warrnambool include The Grampians with their sensational mountain scenery and the coastal city of Portland which lies to the west. Warrnambool presents an ideal alternative for those looking for a great new, cosmopolitan holiday destination.
